College Freshman? Check this out!

As much as we may not want to start thinking about it yet, a new school year is right around the corner. To those high school graduates about to start your first year of college, there are a lot of things to prepare for. Here are some tips to start preparing now:

- Create an academic plan. The idea of planning out the next four years of your life can be daunting, but doing it will save you frustration and time in the future. Since you have to sign up for classes in the summer anyway, try meeting with an academic advisor and make a rough schedule of when you’re going to take your major classes over the next eight semesters.

- Make a shopping list. Sitting down and making a list of all the things you’ll need at college is a good idea. A better idea is to make the list in more than one sitting and over time instead. Why start a list now? You can add to it as you think of things over the next couple months, and you will probably be better prepared when the semester rolls around.

- Talk to your roommates. Most likely, you’ll be rooming with complete strangers. But they don’t have to be complete strangers. Reach out to them once you find out who they are. Not only will it ease your mind to know a little bit about them, but you can also figure out who’s bringing what. No need for two microwaves.

- Apply for a student loan. If you’re looking for a student loan, The Horizon Community Credit Union Smart Option Student Loan by Sallie Mae is a great choice with three great repayment options and competitive interest rates. You can even apply for a loan through our online banking; also you can check balances, keep track of transaction histories, and make transfers.

- Open a checking account. You might want to consider a student checking account; it doesn’t require a minimum balance and doesn’t charge for the first debit card. If you choose to get a debit card, you’ll have an easy way to pay for everyday expenses like food and gas. For those emergency expenses that come up, a credit card might be a good back up as well.

- Get your parents involved. And for the parents that want to be a little more involved, we provide See/Jump Authorization. See Authorization allows members to log into their own account online and monitor balances and transactions for another account simultaneously. Jump Authorization allows members to actually conduct transactions on that second account while still being logged into their original account. As an extra precaution, we could set up an overdraft protection from your parents’ accounts to your account so you don’t get charged any overdraft fees.

Some other tips to help you financially once you get to school would be to create a budget and stick to it, keep track of your spending, and take advantage of student discounts. Overall, using this summer to prepare will give you a lot less to worry about at school.

Now at HCCU - Debit Card Round-Up

Are you like me and want to add to your savings without it feeling like an effort?  We have a new program that started this year called ‘Debit Card Round-Up’, and it does just what it sounds like – every time you use your debit card the total bill gets rounded to the next dollar and the difference is put in your designated savings account!  So, say you’re at a convenience store getting gas and soda – your bill totals $34.36; with the round-up we will pay the store $34.36, put $0.64 to your savings at the end of the day, and the total taken from your checking will be $35.00.   If you use your debit card often you could be adding significant amounts to your savings!  The round-up money is not ‘held’ for any length of time, so if you find you've used your debit card so much that you need the money in savings – simply transfer funds back to your checking account.  See?  Savings without effort!

EcoChecking...keep the green in the environment and in your wallet!

Do you use your debit card often? Have direct deposit that is deposited into your checking account? Use our online bill pay?  Receive e-statements?  Have a checking account or looking to get one?  If you answered Yes to all of these questions, you may qualify for our new EcoChecking account!

Why EcoChecking?
Let’s go green and stop all that paper wasting!  Choose EcoChecking and put those checks away for good!  By opting for electronic services instead (debit card, eStatements, and ACH/online bill pay – all more convenient anyways, right?!) you can earn a higher interest rate on your checking account.  Members who enroll and qualify for EcoChecking earn a higher interest rate of 2.0% APY on balances up to $10,000.00!  Much higher than our 0.05% standard checking account rate!

What does it take to qualify?
It’s easy!  Each calendar month you would need to have:
  • 12 debit card transactions that post and settle from your EcoChecking account
  • 1 direct deposit, ACH withdrawal, or online bill pay transaction in your EcoChecking account
  • eStatements
*You cannot write checks from an EcoChecking account.  If checks are presented against your EcoChecking account, you will be charged a $2 transaction service fee per check at the end of the month.

Not within driving distance of HCCU or any of our affiliated ATM locations but need cash?
Use any ATM you can find!  HCCU does not charge you for using non-affiliated ATMs.  However, other financial institutions may charge you a fee for using theirs.  With an EcoChecking account, we’ll reimburse you that fee!  You can receive up to $10 in ATM surcharge refunds per month (paid at the end of the month) if you get charged for using non-HCCU ATMs.  How awesome is that!?

Let’s help keep our environment healthy while keeping our wallets full!  Call or stop in today to get more information to see if EcoChecking is for you, or to get your new EcoChecking account set up!

Definitely an emergency!

Emergencies happen.  Maybe you forgot to deposit a check, annual insurance payment is due, or an unexpected car repair arises.   That’s why it’s so important to have a financial safety net in place. Horizon Community Credit Union offers a solution for the times your account lacks the funds. It's a:

Getting Ready for College!

Getting ready to go off to college can be stressful enough…figuring out classes, setting up dorm rooms, finding roommates, etc.  Being financially secure and ready with your accounts is just another process that adds to the excitement of getting ready for college.  With that said, there are many ways at Horizon Community Credit Union that can help you with this process!

A student checking account with a debit card is a great item to have when going away to college.  There are plenty of ATMs around that allow you to take money out of your account without having to pay for an ATM fee.  This way you are able to take money out of your account hassle-free no matter where you are!  If you are unsure which ATMs are fee-free, check out the Horizon Community Credit Union ATM Alliance website for a complete list of all the participating free ATMs out there.

Another good thing to do before going to college is to enroll in e-statements and set up online banking. Having access to your account online helps you to manage and keep track of your money throughout the year...especially when you’re trying to figure out if you have enough money to buy that late night pizza once a week (trust me, we've all been there)!  Knowing how much money you have (or sometimes don't have, right?) can save you from getting costly overdraft charges too!

One last thing to consider that can be helpful when you head off to school is applying for a credit card with a low limit.  (Bonus: all of our cards earn Scorecard Rewards points!)  It’s always nice to have one on hand in case an emergency comes up.  Also, using your credit card here and there helps you build up your credit score.  Just make sure that if you do use it, you remember to make your payments on time and you don’t max it out!

Learning how to handle money before you’re out on your own is a step in the right direction of getting through college and being independent. These are all important steps that can help lead to setting up a student’s financial goals and eventually meeting them.  If you want more resources or information, don't hesitate to ask a member of our staff!

If this conversation sounds familiar to you, we want you to share the love!

"The bank charged me $35.00 for insufficient funds in my checking account. They also sent the check back to the company I wrote it out to and they will probably charge me another $35.00. Ugh! I know it was my mistake.  I used my debit card but forgot to write down how much I spent.  But that money was supposed to be used for groceries and my public service bill, and now I'm going to be short this month!"

Later that day, after talking to a member of Horizon Community Credit Union...

"What?! If I had an account at Horizon Community Credit Union I would have overdraft protection!? They pull the money from your savings (share) account to cover the overdraft check and only charge you a $5.00 fee! That's unbelievable! Only five bucks for my accounting error? Not a bad deal! That would have saved me money for my groceries and quite a bit of embarrassment! I’m definitely heading to Horizon CCU to open a savings (share) and checking account!"

Don't keep HCCU a secret!  One of the many benefits to being a credit union member is that credit unions are not for profit.  Rather than pad our own pockets, we return our earnings to our members in the form of higher deposit rates, lower loan rates, and lower and fewer fees.  Not only that, but the mission of Horizon Community Credit Union is to help our members success financially.  Credit unions don't exist to make only a few people rich; they exist to help their members and communities be more financially secure and money-smart.  Know someone who would be better off with our benefits and services?  We'd love to meet them!

Benefits of Online Bill Pay

People today are paying every bill imaginable online: mortgages, loans, rent, credit cards, utilities, & any other bill that you can think of. So the big question is why should you pay your bills online?

  • First of all, you will save money for postage, late fees, and also it will save you time. Converting your paper to online payments is a sure way to prevent losing a bill or even forgetting to pay.  Did I mention that online bill pay through HCCU is a FREE service?
  • Another great perk to online bill pay is that you can set up monthly payments and you won’t have to pay anymore late fees. There are no paper bills to leave on the counter until you suddenly remember that they are past their due date. You can either choose to manually enter your payments each month, or set up for automatic withdrawal from your account. With automatic withdrawal, you can set up your payments in advance of their due date so your bill will always be paid on time.
  • Online bill pay is also safer. Passwords and security keys are required to access your accounts and all your information is encrypted. Your personal information is much more susceptible to stealing if it's on paper. By eliminating paper bills and check writing, you also reduce your impact on the environment.
It takes just a few steps to get enrolled. Here are the steps that will get you on your way…
  1. First, you need a checking account with HCCU.  If you have one, GREAT!  If you don't, it's super easy to open one right away by making a visit to one of our branches.
  2. Go to our website www.horizonccu.com & click on Bill Pay at the top on the page.
  3. Next click Enroll.
  4. Fill out all of the information that is required and you will be on your way. If you have any questions, we are just a call away (920)433-0122 & we would be happy to walk you through the steps.
So don’t waste another second and make sure to enroll for Online Bill Pay today!
