Winter Farmers Markets

Are you missing the summer Farmers Markets? Walking around downtown, checking out vendors with their wares? Well, you are in for a surprise!

Bellin Health is presenting its 6th Annual New Leaf Winter Farmers Market taking place at the KI Convention Center in Downtown Green Bay at 333 Main Street. The Event is Free to Attend. Who doesn’t like free???

There are over 80 vendors including local meats, cheeses, bakery, vegetables, canned items, coffee, handcrafted art pieces and various local restaurants. All of this under one roof and inside one building? How neat is that? You can start out with your morning coffee and end up with an early lunch from the local restaurants. Parking is also free in the Main Street Ramp with the sky-walk over to the KI Center.

The Event is on selected Saturdays from 8 a.m. until Noon. The next Saturdays it will be held on are: Jan. 16, 2016, Jan. 23, 2016, Feb. 6, 2016 and Feb. 13, 2016.

So, start your New Year by getting yourself over to the KI Center and check out all of the local vendors and various restaurants.

Kids Day in Green Bay

If you have children 17 or younger, June 25th is marked on your calendar. Why? It’s the annual Kids’ Day in Green Bay!

Kids’ Day was started by Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt in 2003. In his own words, this day was established “as a way to show children how special they are to their families and how important they are to the future of Green Bay.” Kids’ Day occurs annually on June 25th, and has been a success from the start. It grows every year to include more and more events and activities. The best part, and I think you’ll agree, is that ALL EVENTS ARE FREE FOR CHILDREN. Yes, I said FREE FOR CHILDREN.

The events run throughout the day at locations across the city. City parks, Bay Beach, the Wildlife Sanctuary, CityDeck, Brown County Libraries, and a dentist’s office will have prepared activities for your child/ren. And that’s just a fraction of what’s available! Check out the link below for the full schedule.

We would love to see you while you’re out and about with your kiddos. The Mayor’s Lunch is at Leicht Park from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm, and Horizon Community Credit Union will have a booth with information and goodies. We can’t wait to see you!

New Fees, Old Fees, & What YOU Need to Know!

Fees?  What fees?!

Don’t panic! Most of our membership won’t be affected by ANY of our fees – even the new fees. The Fall Newsletter shows all of our fees, current and new, but if you missed the newsletter just check at either Horizon Community Credit Union branch and they can help you out. Which fees are new? Things like ‘current account activity printout’, so you still get a free statement, but now if you come in during the month and need a printed copy there will be a $1 fee. How to avoid the fee? Try checking your account online! Remember, we can give you any information on your account, the fee comes in when we have to print it out.

What else is new? There’s a dormant fee of $5 now. A dormant fee is assessed on accounts that are not used – no deposits, withdrawals, or payments in a 12 month period. How to avoid that? Use your account at least once every 12 months!! That’s it!

Of course we still have fees involving NSF/Overdraft, Stop Payments and Returned items. As these fees will generally not be waived, you still want to keep a close eye on your accounts so you don’t run into those fees.

A lot of fees can be waived depending on what level you are in for SunDrops points. For instance, if you are in the Silver group the fees for photocopies and faxing are waived! If you’re in the Gold group you aren't charged for a current month activity printout. Lucky you if you’re in the Platinum group, a lot of fees are completely waived!!!

So take a deep breath (of relief) and remember if you need any help - we’re here!

Gividends - giving has never been so easy!

Sometimes donating to a charity of choice can be a long and stressful process. First you have to pick a charity you wish to contribute to, then you have to decide how much and how often you would like to donate, and finally you have to hold yourself accountable for those funds and keeping track!

Well enough of all that work, HCCU is coming to the rescue! Beginning January of 2015, we are rolling out a GREAT new program that makes donating simple! Each month all depository accounts, such as a savings, club or money market, receive dividends. This new program is designed to automatically withdraw these dividends for you after they are posted, and donate them to a charity of your choice! We have a list of 10 great local & national charities to pick from, including Bay Area Humane Society, House of Hope, Beacon House, and Paul’s Pantry.  Every little bit helps, and if we all pool our dividends, just think of the difference we can make in our community!

I know setting this up may seem like a lot of effort as well, but really it’s simple! Stop in to either of the HCCU branches and speak with an MSR!  It’s as easy as filling out a quick enrollment form that tells us which charity you would like to donate to, what percentage of your dividends, and from which account.  From there, we take care of everything!  And when it comes to tax time, you can see the dividends you earned as well as your donations on your monthly statements, so keeping track is super easy!

Let’s kick off 2015 the right way, and start donating to our local community!

Why Reading is Beneficial

When was the last time you read anything other than something on social media? For many of you it may be quite a while, and let me tell you something: you are missing out! Reading is incredibly beneficial to your everyday life. Continue reading and learn some of the perks that come with being a reader.

• Stress relief – No matter what age you are, you always have something causing you to stress out whether it is school, friends, your job or your family. Reading is like therapy for those of us who enjoy it. No matter how much stress is on our shoulders it is easy to get carried away into the story and escape reality for a while. If you have trouble falling asleep at night due to stress, reading for 15 minutes before bed could help you fall asleep sooner.  
• Mental stimulation – Reading helps keep the brain active and engaged. By doing so you give your brain the exercise it needs and keep it from losing its power and keep it healthy which could help prevent illnesses that affect your brain.   
• Memory improvement – When reading a book there are many things that need to be remembered. Like who each character is, their characteristics, their background, plots and schemes, etc. And by creating new memories, the brain creates new brain pathways that also strengthen existing ones which improves your ability to remember things.  
• Stronger analytical thinking skills and vocabulary expansion – Throughout a book you find yourself catching on to details that add to what is going on in the story.  You try to sort them out to determine what happened or what is going to happen. At the end of the book you think about whether you thought the story was well written or not and you learn to express your opinion with solid evidence from the story to support it. You may not realize it but by doing all of that you were able to put critical and analytical thinking skills to work. The more you do it, the better you get at it! By reading you also expose yourself to new words and their meaning by the context around them, which in return helps expand your vocabulary. Knowledge is precious and no matter what happens it cannot be taken away from you!  

So next time you’re having a bad day, start enjoying some of the incredible benefits that  come with reading, grab a book and enjoy yourself some free entertainment!

Green Bay Home Building Seminar 10/21/2014

Does your house still fit you?  Have you always wondered what it would be like to have a layout that you designed?  Are you afraid to tackle the building project because you don’t know who to turn to for questions; or maybe you don’t know what questions to ask?  Building a new home can be a daunting task.  We do not want you to tackle that alone.  How would you feel if there were experts available in one spot on one evening in October?

October 21^st, at 5:30 p.m. Horizon Community Credit Union (HCCU) will be hosting a free informational meeting at our Voyager Drive office.  We have assembled some of the best experts in the Green Bay area for a home building seminar.  One of the area’s top builders, realtor, title and homeowner’s insurance agents, and mortgage lenders will be present to answer all of your questions, ranging from some of the most common (listed below) to whatever issue is giving you a headache as you think through the process.

· Will my home fit on my lot?
· Which plan is best for my family?
· How much can I customize?
· What will my new home really cost?
· What are the best rates and financing programs?
· What is the building process?

Win a college scholarship through your credit union!

High school seniors and parents…now is the time to start thinking about which college you're going to choose and how you're going to pay for it.  We know college is REALLY expensive!  And let's be honest, most scholarship applications are long and tedious and NO fun.  Did you know you could win a college scholarship by playing a video game through your credit union’s website?

I’m talking about Money Mission. It is a fourteen week simulation of real life that is designed to help teach money management skills through a computer game. Basically, you play little mini-games and puzzles for “work”. Then you get paid and you can buy things like a car, stocks, and movie tickets. At the end of the fourteen weeks, you’ll have a final score of your success – and hopefully some helpful insight into the financial choices that will pop up in your near future.

Then, to enter to win the scholarship, high school seniors who are registered participants in the game can submit a 400-800 word essay about what they learned playing the game. The competition is open to participants throughout the country and the number and amounts of scholarships will be announced at the start of the fourteen week simulation.

Save Money at the ATM!

We know you want to do some traveling this summer, and we don't want you to feel tied down by your credit union.  We've all been there...we know how frustrating it can be when you're away from home and you need to take money out of an ATM, but you know you'll be charged a fee for taking your own money.  Sometimes, financial institutions charge their customers a fee ON TOP of the ATM's fee!  So, that $20 you needed really cost you $25 in the end!  Outrageous, right?

We completely agree!  For starters, Horizon Community Credit Union will never charge you a fee for using someone else's ATM.  And we can even help you avoid being charged by the ATM itself!  HCCU is a member of several nationwide fee-free ATM networks, which allow you to withdraw money at non-HCCU ATMs without having to pay that pesky fee. You read right. You can use your ATM or debit card at participating terminals without paying a fee. Benefits of Online Bill Pay

People today are paying every bill imaginable online: mortgages, loans, rent, credit cards, utilities, & any other bill that you can think of. So the big question is why should you pay your bills online?

• First of all, you will save money for postage, late fees, and also it will save you time. Converting your paper to online payments is a sure way to prevent losing a bill or even forgetting to pay.  Did I mention that online bill pay through HCCU is a FREE service?
• Another great perk to online bill pay is that you can set up monthly payments and you won’t have to pay anymore late fees. There are no paper bills to leave on the counter until you suddenly remember that they are past their due date. You can either choose to manually enter your payments each month, or set up for automatic withdrawal from your account. With automatic withdrawal, you can set up your payments in advance of their due date so your bill will always be paid on time.
• Online bill pay is also safer. Passwords and security keys are required to access your accounts and all your information is encrypted. Your personal information is much more susceptible to stealing if it's on paper. By eliminating paper bills and check writing, you also reduce your impact on the environment.
