Summer Fun--Don't Miss Out!

Boy, can you believe summer is half over already?  Have you been able to get out and do some fun and exciting activities this summer?  If not, look no further that your own back yard.   Downtown Green Bay has a lot to offer. 

Start your Saturday morning off with a walk down Washington Street and enjoy all the vendors at the Saturday morning Farmers Market, which is running through Oct 31^st.  If a Saturday will not work for you, try Wednesday nights on Broadway. Their Farmers Market runs through Oct. 7^th. There is an abundance of fresh produce, but that's not all! There are also live music, arts and craft vendors, and food vendors, and their Battle of the Bands runs from 8-10 pm. With all that this Farmer's Market has to offer, you can make a night of it with the whole family.  

Artstreet will be August 28^th -30^th.  It's free to attend, though donations are appreciated.  There will be over 200 artists from throughout the country, as well as live music and performing arts shows.  They also offer gourmet foods and creative hands-on activities for your children.  This is another great event for the whole family to enjoy. 

Downtown also has the Waterboard Warriors Ski Show on Wednesday nights until August 26^th.  These are 30 minutes shows at 6 and 7 p.m. The shows are free and open to the public. If you stop by, you might see something like this:

There is also two days during the week where you can get lunch with a show.  On Wednesdays from 11:30 a.m-1:30 p.m., lunch is served on the CityDeck by Cherry St Landing. This event goes until August 26th.  There is also a Summer in the Park at Whitney Park (800 Main St.). You can enjoy food from local food trucks while you enjoy the musical entertainment. These concerts are held on Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. -2:30 p.m. until August 27^th.

Join us in the March for Babies!

What it is: The March of Dimes March for Babies is a three-mile fundraising walk.  You can walk individually, or join a team (like our Horizon CCU team!).  The event raises money and awareness for premature birth and birth defects.  The Green Bay walk takes place April 25 at 9:00 am at Ashwaubomay Park.

What it does: The March of Dimes was originally started by President FDR to combat polio.  With that original mission accomplished, they turned their attention to another issue that affects the lives of millions – premature birth and birth defects.  Now, the mission of the March of Dimes is to make sure that every baby is born healthy and full-term.  Funds raised by the March of Dimes are put to work on research and education for vaccines, diseases, medications, genetics and screening procedures that will help accomplish their new mission.  Aside from the March for Babies walk, the March of Dimes also funds its work through grant money.  In 2003 they started a campaign to end premature births.  Using this grant money, they have implemented programs including group prenatal care and risk reduction services that complement a woman’s overall care during pregnancy, such as smoking cessation services, substance abuse counseling, management of diabetes and hypertension, and case management services.
  
Why it is important: About 1 in 9 babies is born too soon – amounting to 450,000 premature births in the US, and 15 million premature births worldwide, each year.  Babies born just a few weeks early are at risk of severe health problems and lifelong disabilities. Premature birth is the number 1 killer of newborns.  Overall, the US is given a grade of “C” for this statistic.  Our premature birth rates are worse than many other developed nations.  In an effort to improve that grade, the March of Dimes also advocates for the passing state and federal laws which help to improve health screenings and education for expectant mothers and their unborn babies.

What you can do: Join the walk!  Start a team of your own, or join up with ours!  Ask family and friends to pledge donations for your walk.  Even if you’re not able to make it to the actual event, you can still make a donation yourself, or raise money on behalf of a team.  This year, all donations that Team Horizon CCU raises will be matched, up to $1000.  So donations automatically get doubled!  We hope to see you there!

NEW Community Shelter

In 1994 The NEW Community Shelter opened it’s doors  in Green Bay, WI.  Since then they have had 2 successful capital campaigns that enabled them to move to their present location at 301 Mather St in Green Bay and then doubled the size of their kitchen/serving area!  They provide emergency shelter for adult men and women and a wide variety of programs to help them get back on their feet.  They have programs for everything from job hunting to clothing and haircuts to addiction counseling.  They are the only emergency shelter program in this area open year round.

The shelter also provides meals to any child or adult in need.  This service is available to anyone  – not just their residents.  They only ask for peaceful behavior and sobriety.  I’ve helped serve meals at the shelter and it is an amazing experience!  You meet not only residents of the shelter but also
families who just need a hot meal to stretch their budget.  They serve dinner everyday from 5 pm to 6pm, and they also serve lunches from 11:30am to 12:30pm on weekends and every holiday.  On average their evening meal serves over 200 people!

Stock the Shelves - There's still time to donate today!

How many of us have ever really gone hungry for any length of time? Yet it is one of the biggest challenges a lot of families have: how to pay for quality, nutritious food. It’s sad, and the worst part is that most of those affected are children.  Sometimes the only real meal they get is at school. When school is not in session many don’t even get that. 

So many people are turning to food pantries to help fill their kid’s needs, the demand is huge.  We at Horizon Community Credit Union have joined many others in the Stock the Shelves Campaign. Please join us in helping those in need, especially during this holiday season, and give the gift of a full belly.

You can stop in at either one of our branches, located on Eastman Ave. or at the Voyager Branch and drop off your non-perishable donations.  Or you may choose to donate a monetary gift which will be given to the Stock the Shelves campaign. Donations must be received by the end of the day today for this year's campaign.  We thank you ahead of time for any and all donations, you don’t have to be a member to drop off donations, so stop by and help us fill our shopping carts.

Fun, Exciting Sports at a Bargain Price!

HEY SPORTS FANS! Looking for something fun to do this weekend, but aren’t looking to spend a ton of money? Have you ever considered attending a University of Wisconsin- Green Bay’s Women or Men’s basketball game? Basketball season has started at UWGB and they would love to have your support!

The Men’s team plays at the Resch Center located on the west side of Green Bay. The team plays on many different days of the week, including a variety of times. Season tickets, ticket packages, as well as individual tickets are all available for purchase on TicketStar.com or at the Resch Center. Tickets for an individual game are as cheap as $11 for an adult and $7 for those 17 and under. What a deal!

The Women’s team plays at the UWGB Kress Events Center. The beautiful facility has a large arena that holds tons of fans, and let me tell you the games are fun and full of energy! All tickets packages and individual tickets are available on TicketStar.com as well as at the University Ticketing and Information Center on campus. Tickets for an individual game are as cheap as $9 for an adult and $7 for those 17 and under.

Mark the games on your calendar! There’s nothing better than watching some great athletics, for a cheap price, in a great environment! UWGB would love to have your support!

Green Bay Home Building Seminar 10/21/2014

Does your house still fit you?  Have you always wondered what it would be like to have a layout that you designed?  Are you afraid to tackle the building project because you don’t know who to turn to for questions; or maybe you don’t know what questions to ask?  Building a new home can be a daunting task.  We do not want you to tackle that alone.  How would you feel if there were experts available in one spot on one evening in October?

October 21^st, at 5:30 p.m. Horizon Community Credit Union (HCCU) will be hosting a free informational meeting at our Voyager Drive office.  We have assembled some of the best experts in the Green Bay area for a home building seminar.  One of the area’s top builders, realtor, title and homeowner’s insurance agents, and mortgage lenders will be present to answer all of your questions, ranging from some of the most common (listed below) to whatever issue is giving you a headache as you think through the process.

· Will my home fit on my lot?
· Which plan is best for my family?
· How much can I customize?
· What will my new home really cost?
· What are the best rates and financing programs?
· What is the building process?

Art Harvest featuring Fall Family Festival at Green Bay Botanical Gardens

Homemade lemonade, teas and coffee served by La Java. Concessions served all day include brats, hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken, veggie patties, chips, ice cream and more! There will be FREE parking and shuttle bus pick-up and drop-off at NWTC Lot G. Plenty of free activities for the kids! From pumpkin bowling, apple toss, build your own scarecrow, pumpkin ring toss, face painting from 10 - 3, pumpkin Golf, and wagon rides! Children will also have a chance to win prizes by participating in games and activities!

Fallfest on the Fox

Fallfest will take place in the Adams Street parking lot in Downtown Green Bay.  Fallfest on the Fox officially kicks off with the longtime favorite, the Annual ASPIRO Awareness Walk. The two mile walk will take participants through Downtown Green Bay, on the Fox River Trail and end on the Fallfest grounds.  Fallfest on the Fox will host the famous Chili Cook-Off and a popular children’s area with games and bounce house.  The ASPIRO Pub & Grill will provide food and beverage choices.  Also, Big Mouth will perform from 10:30 pm – 1:30 pm.
